What is Microsoft Word ..?

Microsoft Word is a type of word processor software ( Developed by Microsoft ). In which various types of attractive documents are created. It is widely used to create a different type of document such as... Writing Reports, Letters, Resumes, Making forms, Biodata, Tables, Newspaper Editorials, etc...

A file is called a Document.  MS Word file is always saved with the extension of .docx

Uses of MS Word...

It also provides us the facility of typing, editing, formatting, and printing. For this reason, Microsoft Word is used for a variety of formal and personal tasks. Office documents can be kept and maintained through Microsoft Word.

So, This is a very important software for people of all age groups, in schools, in colleges, and for official purposes. 

Starting MS Word (To Start MS Word)

There are three methods to Open or Start MS Word -

  1. Click on the search box in the taskbar and then type Run and click on the Run option. A text box appears after clicking. In that text box, type WinWord and press the Enter key.
  2. Double click on the Microsoft icon available on the desktop.
  3. Click on the Start button. On opening the start menu, select the program option. After selecting MS-OFFICE or program from the menu received, select MS-Word and click.

Or  Start ->All Programs -> MS-Office ->MS-Word.

Or Start ->Go Alphabetically M->MS-Office-> Click on Dropdown Menu->Select MS Word

Default In MS-WORD:

  • Software used to create Text-based Document is - Word Processor
  • Default extension for MS-Word - .docx
  • Default line spacing in MS-Word - Single
  • Spelling mistake is shown as - Redline
  • The grammatical mistake is shown as - Blueline
  • Default page orientation is - Portrait
  • For correction of common typing errors - Autocorrect
  • Default font size is shown in MS-Word - 11
  • Maximum font size is shown in MS-Word - 72

(To increase the font size from 72 we can type the number in the font box as per our choice.
We can increase our font size maximum in MS-Word between 1 to 1638.)

How to create an MS-Word document?

To create an MS Word document or file, follow the steps which we know better. Then once the program is open, click on “File” then click on the “New” option. This opens a new doc or file or page where something new can be created or written.

MS-Word Menu bar

(The main difference between a toolbar and a menu bar is that a toolbar contains images and icons, while a menu bar contains words like File, Home, Insert, etc. Functionally, a toolbar acts as a shortcut to a specific function or command. … On the other hand, clicking a menu bar simply opens up the options under it and show images & icon ….)

File

The file menu has many options like New, Open, Save, Save as, Print, Close, etc.

Home

The Home menu bar has options like alignment, line spacing, font color, font size, font style, bullets, etc. All the basic elements which one may need to edit their document are available under the Home option.

Insert

Page break, blank page, images, date & time, charts, hyperlink, bookmark, tables, shapes, graphs, header, footer, page number, etc. can all be entered in the document. They are included in the “Insert” toolbar.


The Design or Template we want our document to create can be selected under the Design tab. Choosing an appropriate design will enhance the appearance of our document.


Under the Page Layout tab, the options come like margins, orientation, columns, lines, indentation, spacing, etc. Which makes our document more impressive. 

Reference 

This tab is the most useful for those who are creating a thesis or writing books or lengthy documents. Options like cross reference, citation, footnote/endnote, table of contents, caption, bibliography, etc. it can be found under this tab.

Mailing

In the mail tab, the options are Envelopes, Level, Mail merge, etc. Mail merge is a process that is used for sending the same copy of the document to more than one person having different addresses. 

Review

Spell check, grammar, Thesaurus, word count, language, translation, comments, etc. can all be tracked under the review tab. This acts as an advantage for those who get their documents reviewed on MS Word.

Apart from all the above-mentioned features, Scales or Rulers are also available for users' convenience in horizontal and vertical types.

View

The page can be set in different views and layouts, which can be added and optimized using the View tab on the Word document.
